Ear trainer

The players who pick up songs by ear aren't magic — they've just learned what each interval sounds like. Two notes play; name the distance between them. A few minutes a day compounds fast.

How to train your ear for guitar

Interval recognition is the foundation of playing by ear. Start with ascending perfect 4ths and 5ths (the building blocks of power chords and bass motion), then add major/minor 3rds that define major vs minor chords.

Short daily quizzes beat occasional long sessions. Use the song mnemonics when you miss — linking a sound to a melody you already know is how intervals stick.

  • Begin on the easiest level until you're consistently above 80%.
  • Practice ascending first, then descending, then harmonic (both notes together).
  • After a quiz, find the same interval on the fretboard in the scale explorer.
